Retired MPD Lieut. Larry Dean Schickling, age 64, of Madelia, Minnesota died on May 5, 2021, at Madelia Community Hospital. A public visitation will be held on Friday, May 14, 2021 from 4:00 pm-7:00 pm at the Madelia Golf Club in Madelia with COVID-19 requirements being followed. Private family services will be held at the St. John's Lutheran Church Willow Creek, on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at 11:00 am. A livestream will be available at https://www.facebook.com/stjohnswillowcreek/ Larry Dean Schickling "Schick", was born on December 12, 1956 to Willard and Berneda (Schulz) Schickling in Mankato, MN. He attended Lake Crystal Public School as a child and graduated from Madelia Public High School in 1975. In 1976 he began his career in law enforcement for the Madelia Police Department and the Watonwan County Sheriff's Department. In May of 1978 he became a full-time officer with Madelia Police Department, rising to the rank of Lieutenant. He cared deeply about bringing up fellow police officers and he particularly did so by being a union steward with IBEW and training officer. He retired in May of 2008. He served as a City Council member for 9 years for the City of Madelia. Pursuing a family tradition of tree cutting, Larry opened Schickling Tree Service, LLC in 2008. Larry married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis (Vandrey), in 1989 and remained in Madelia. Larry was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting, and helping friends on the farm. One of Larry's greatest joys was his grandchildren, Sam, Finn, and Addy. Larry passed away on May 5, 2021 at the Madelia Community Hospital supported by his family. Larry is survived by his wife, Phyllis Schickling (Vandrey) of Madelia; daughters, Heather (Michael Bliesmer) Russ of Madelia, Rachel (Adam Roemer) Schickling of Madelia, and Tiffany (David Nichols, III) Schickling-Nichols of New Ulm; 3 grandchildren, Sam Russ, Finn Bliesmer, and Addison Nichols; siblings, Steve (Sherry) Schickling, LaVonne (Doug) Teigum, and Dave (Jackie) Schickling; aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins; a community of friends too numerous to name; and fellow officers in law enforcement. He is preceded in death by his parents Willard and Berneda Schickling; grandparents; fathers-in-law, Victor Vandrey and Ronald Evans; and cherished friends Harold Davis, Ron Bocock, and Henry Husk.
