Larell Virgil Kettner

January 1, 1932 — February 20, 2016

LaRell Virgil Kettner was born January 1, 1932, in Sundown Township, Redwood County to Theodore and Frieda (Drusch) Kettner. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Springfield. LaRell attended country school #27 in Sundown Township through the 6th grade, then attended Springfield Public School. He served as a computer operator in the 68th Anti-aircraft Artillery with the U.S. Army from 1952-1954 during the Korean War. LaRell was honorably discharged on August 19, 1954. He was united in marriage to Shirley Knudson on August 25, 1956, at Albion Lutheran Church. The couple worked the Family Century Farm and LaRell also worked for North Star Seed and Sawvell's Feed and Seed while raising certified seed for many years. He was an active member of Sundown Lutheran Church and served on the Church Council, and was a member and former chairman of school district #1750, which was originally school district #27. He also served on the St. John Lutheran Home Board for several years. LaRell enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, playing cards at Fritz's, and softball and baseball. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. LaRell and family were extremely grateful for the care he received by the staff at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Springfield and Rochester. He is survived by his wife of 59+ years Shirley of Springfield; daughters- Julie Plantenberg of Avon, Leanne (Scott) Van Doren of Shakopee, Marni (Joseph) Rygalski of Strongsville, OH, Kari (Peter) Rudh of Rothsay, and Nancy (Jason) Burton of New Brighton; 12 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 2 step-great-grandchildren; sisters- Betty (Cecil) Seim of Eagan, and Ardis (Max) Groebner of New Ulm; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father and mother- Theodore and Frieda Kettner; father-in-law and mother-in-law Arnold and Stella Knudson; son-in-law Richard Plantenberg; brother T.
