Kenneth Eugene Unruh was born on March 8, 1931, at Dalhart, Texas, to Herbert and Alma Reimer Unruh. The family moved several times, from Texas to Oklahoma, to California, and back, even as the Dust Bowl ravaged the nation. He was educated in Oklahoma and graduated from high school in 1949 from Bethany High in Balko, Oklahoma. He received Christ as Savior and was baptized on confession of faith, joining the Balko Mennonite Brethren Church. He started what would occupy nearly 70 years of his life's work, his ministry, shortly after, recognizing the call to serve God at age 17. Kenneth was married to Ann Harder on August 19, 1952. To this union were born three sons and one daughter. He went on to graduate with his Bachelor of Arts from Tabor College and his Bachelor of Divinity from North American Baptist Seminary. He was ordained for the work of gospel ministry on January 17, 1958, by the council at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Junction City, Kansas. Kenneth was called to serve as pastor of North American Baptist churches in North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Minnesota. He also served the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren Church in Mountain Lake. While serving at churches in Oklahoma and Iowa, he was integral in the construction of new church buildings, guiding building committees through the work of those projects. He also served the community of St. Bonifacius, Minnesota, as hospital chaplain for many years. He also served on multiple denominational committees and boards, and attended, with more than a million others, the Stand in the Gap calling America to repentance in 1997. His wife, father, mother, sister, Elvera Farmer, and daughter, Audrey Dietel, predeceased him. He is survived by three sons, Gerald (Doris), of New Ulm, Minnesota, Robert (Patricia), of Black Hawk, Colorado, and Michael (Ashlie), of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; a son-in-law, Gordon Dietel, of Norwood Young America, Minnesota; one sister, Shirley (Ron) Hiebert, of Olathe, Kansas, one sister-in-law, Doris Dueck, of Curitiba, Parana, Brazil; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
