Kenneth "Kenny" Dale Nelson was born to Oliver and Margaret (Muggs) Nelson on July 16, 1948, in Mason City, Iowa. His family later moved to the St. James area and he was baptized on Feb 27, 1949, in Butterfield. Kenny graduated from St. James High School in 1966. After graduating, he worked at S-T Industries, managed the Butterfield VFW, and later worked at the Butterfield Liquor Store. Although Kenny was a quiet man, he enjoyed being around people and was known to have a quick wit and a face that was so expressive, sometimes a look was all that was needed to let you know what he was thinking. Kenny enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing golf and softball, reading and going to the library, but he loved spending time with his family the most.
Kenny was a kind person who was a true example of humility and generosity to family and friends. He was a good cook and seemed to be ready at any hour with a meal to serve his family when they would stop in for a visit. Kenny had a unique bond with each one of his grandchildren, and spending time with them was something he treasured. He was always eager to hear about his grandchildren’s activities and events and they could count on him for a trip to Schmidt's bakery or a meal at Hometown and a chocolate milk. He will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Kenneth is survived by his children, Jesse (Julie) Nelson of Montevideo, MN, Gerad (Kelsey) Nelson of La Quinta, CA, Cory (Angelina) Nelson of Windom, Kelsey (Anthony) Forand of St. James; grandchildren, Blake (Emily) Nelson, Brooklyn Nelson (Austin Sorensen), Ellie, Lucy, and Maggie Nelson, Layla Nelson, and Hadley Forand; great-grandchildren, Bennett Sorensen and Bostyn Nelson; brothers, Warren (Jodie) Nelson and Russell (Julie) Nelson; sister, Sherri (Pete) Poulson; and many other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Margaret Nelson.
