On Tuesday, May 25, 2021, Kathy Grundmeyer, of Madelia, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her daughters and a treasured friend, at the age of 78. She was a champion of many medical challenges for more than 25 years. Each time she would rise above the medical expectations and prove that determination was the best medicine. Truly a walking miracle of God! A Celebration of Life service will be held on Wednesday, June 16 at 2pm, with a time of gathering starting at 1pm, at Salem Lutheran Church of Madelia, MN. Pastor Greg Volbrecht will preside. Urn bearers will be Aaden Van Derostyne with Dr. Gustavo (Gus) Colmenares as honorary urn bearer. Kathleen Marsha was born December 13, 1942 in Springfield, Minnesota to Olaf Richard and Mildred Evelyn (Bittner) Anderson. She was the middle daughter of three. She grew up in Sanborn, MN then left for high school at Doctor Martin Lutheran High School in New Ulm, living in the dorms; graduating in 1960. She would talk about studying at the top of "Hermann the German" monument and talked often of her walk up and down Center Street hill. She attended Mankato Commercial College where she learned shorthand and other secretarial skills. She worked as a secretary at the Northwestern National Bank in Minneapolis, MN. As part of the "Steno pool", her proficiency was so impressive that she was personally requested by many at the bank. Through her Luther' friends, she met Jim Grundmeyer and they were married on September 14, 1963 in Sanborn, MN. Through this union they were blessed with two daughters, Kayla Jill and Karae Joy. Using her God-given talent of creativity, Kathy would do many craft shows around the area, including Art in the Park (Sanborn), Turner Hall (New Ulm) and while living near Godahl, Kathy started the Godahl Craft show at the recreation center that ran for many years. It was a family affair, on the first weekend of deer hunting, Jim and the girls would work in the kitchen preparing and serving breakfast and lunch while Kathy would sell her beautiful arrangements and more. While living in Madelia in the 70's the Grundmeyer family ran a greenhouse and sold Christmas trees from Fort Slocum south of town. She also worked at Howard's Bakery in Madelia and the Madelia Times-Messenger with type setting. Kathy worked for Mainstreet Floral and Mainstreet Floral & Gifts for many years, where she shared her love of floral design. She took great pride in her designs and loved hearing from the grateful recipients. Kathy worked for REM of Madelia for 12 years. In 1997 she started working at COR and was there for 21 years. Kathy was an active member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Madelia. She shared her creative talent with the church by decorating the Christmas trees and wreaths for many years. Kathy would often provide fresh arrangements for the alter and provide meals for the pastors of Salem throughout the years. In lieu of a traditional visitation the night before the funeral, the family would like to offer another opportunity to honor Kathy at our "Flamingle" (she loved flamingos and a reason to mingle) at the stone shelter at Watona City Park in Madelia on the evening of June 16, at 5:25 pm for a gathering and bonfire to share stories of Kathy's life and laugh.
