Joseph Charles Mathiowetz was born November 18, 1921, on the family farm north of Sleepy Eye, the son of Joseph Mary (Gewerth) Mathiowetz. He attended country school, District #35, through the 8th grade. He farmed until he was drafted into the Army Air Corps, serving from 1942 to 1946. He returned to Sleepy Eye where he continued to farm until his retirement in 1985. On May 7, 1988, Joe married Shirley (Macht) Stelzer. The couple continued to live on the farm place until 2004 when they moved into Sleepy Eye. Joe enjoyed baseball, bowling, golfing, fishing and hunting. He was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, V.F.W., and Catholic Aid. He is survived by his wife; Shirley Mathiowetz of Sleepy Eye, step-children; Stanley (Karen) Stelzer of North Redwood, Cheryl Easterday of Worthington, Brenda Stelzer of Clements, 8 step-grandchildren, 13 step-great-grandchildren, sisters; Loretta Mathiowetz of Fairmont, Evelyn Betts of Fairmont and sisters-in-law; Annie Mathiowetz, Lorraine Mathiowetz, Mildred Mathiowetz.
