John Vetter

John William Vetter was born in Ormsby, MN on September 19, 1939 to Laverne and Mildred (Beck) Vetter. A life time member of Augustana Lutheran Church, John was baptized and confirmed there. John graduated from St. James High School with the Class of '58 and began working for Chicago North Western Railroad (later Union Pacific). On May 8, 1963 he was inducted into the US Army. He served on active duty for two years and his reserve obligations ended on May 7, 1969. Upon leaving active duty, John returned to the railroad, working as a brakeman and conductor. He retired in 2001. On December 14, 1968, he married Janice Wegner at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mountain Lake, MN and recently celebrated their 45th anniversary. John enjoyed socializing, driving around town, going to the casino, attending his son and grandson's ball games, watching St. James High School sports, the Twins, Vikings, and Timberwolves, and listening to Country Music. He had a sense of humor and enjoyed shows such as Cash Cab and Wheel of Fortune. He was a member of United Transport Union and a lifetime member of the St. James American Legion, Post 33. John is survived by his wife, Janice, St. James, son, Jason (special friend, Heather), Sioux Falls, grandson, Jamison, sisters: Colleen (Duane Duke) Nessler, St. James, Marilynn (Byron) Epland, Prescott, WI, and Sandra Resick, New Hope, and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Judy Helferich, Butterfield, and brothers-in-law: Jerry (Kathy) Wegner, New Ulm, and Gene Wegner, St. James.
