John Vernon Sundstrom

John Vernon Sundstrom age 93, of Lake Crystal, Minnesota died on December 5, 2020, at The Beacon at Lake Crystal in Lake Crystal, Minnesota. Private Graveside Services will be held at the Riverside Cemetery, Madelia, MN. A memorial service is being planned for summer 2021. Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home, Pilgrim Chapel in Madelia, Minnesota. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.sturmfh.com. Vernon was born August 12, 1927 in Centerville, South Dakota to Simon and Anna(Johnson) Sundstrom. Both Simon and Anna immigrated from Sweden and homesteaded a farm in Beresford SD. Vernon had an older brother Sidney and a younger sister, Elinor. In 1941, the Sundstrom family moved to the Lake Crystal and Madelia area. Vernon purchased his farm around 1952 and worked the farm with his parents. Vernon was drafted into the Army in March 1954, and served as an ambulance driver in Korea. He was given an honorable discharge in December 1955. Although Vernon was a bachelor farmer, he was a loving family man to his nieces and nephews welcoming his brothers and sister's children to the farm for the summer. Later his grand nieces and nephews would spend some of their summers at the farm. Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Sidney (LaVera) in 2011 and sister, Elinor (Eldridge) Daugherty in November 2020. Vernon is survived by his nieces and nephews: Dan (Diane) Daugherty ; Bill Sundstrom (Betty Cassady); Brian Sundstrom (Judy Olausen) ; Katherine Sundstrom; Steve (Ellen) Sundstrom; Dawn Sundstrom (Mitzi Griffin) and Ann Teitel along with 10 great nieces and nephews.
