John Schmid

John Roger Schmid was born February 18, 1916 in Springfield, MN, the son of John Richard and Pauline (Fecker) Schmid. John attended and graduated from Springfield High School in 1934. He was a field underwriter for Monarch Insurance from 1937 until 1982. John was united in marriage to Dorothy Wiggins on June 30, 1941 at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield. He served in the US Navy from 1942 to 1945 in the South Pacific with the 7th Fleet. John served on the Springfield School Board from 1957 to 1969, was a member of the St. Raphael's Financial Board, Knights of Columbus, Springfield American Legion, Springfield Golf Course, and the Bowling Assn. He enjoyed volunteering at St. John's Lutheran Home, assisting with Meals on Wheels, singing in church, golfing, bowling, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren. John died on Tuesday, January 9, 2007 at the Springfield Medical Center in Springfield at the age of 90 years. He is survived by his wife - Dorothy Schmid of Springfield; sons - Michael Schmid of Cass Lake and Mark and wife Debra Schmid of Apple Valley; a daughter - Marsha and husband Myron Scholtz of Cambridge; 8 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; a brother - Oliver Schmid of Bloomington; and a sister-in-law - Helen Schmid of Comfrey. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers- Richard and Gilbert; and sisters - Lorraine Altermatt, Zerelda Schultz, and Carolyn Gramentz.
