John Byron Hannay

July 6, 1959 — May 15, 2016

John Byron Hannay was born on July 6, 1959 the son of William and Twila (Peterson) Hannay in Minneapolis, MN. In his youth he participated in Boy Scouts and became an Eagle Scout. On January 16, 1988 he married Kala Petermann at St. Matthew's Church in Evan, MN. He was a graduate of the Carlson School of Management at the U of M and later became a Certified Insurance Counselor. John worked at his father's insurance agency in Brooklyn Center and eventually moved the agency to Columbia Heights until he sold the agency to his partner. He and Kala then moved to Sleepy Eye where John worked for Jensen Motors first as a car salesman, then sales manager for over 20 years. He later worked at the Community Insurance Agency. John was a member of Toastmasters, was on the St. Matthew's Church Council serving as President multiple times, a member of St. Matthews Friendship Club and active in the Sleepy Eye Chamber of Commerce. He is a former Mason, Shriner and member of the Eastern Star. Attending the fishing opener was a family tradition for his family. He loved watching movies and will forever be remembered as a history buff. John is survived by his wife Kala and loving dog, Bella, father William, brothers James (Renae) and Michael (Kathy), sister Linda (Don) Nelson, brothers-in-law Richard (Pete) Petermann and John (Jack) Petermann, sister-in-law Karen Beltz, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother Twila, mother and father-in-law Gilbert and Anna Petermann and goddaughter Jordan Jennings. Blessed be his memory.
