John Etter

John was born in Madelia on January 26, 1951 to Clem and Edythe (Thompson) Etter. He attended Madelia Schools graduating in 1969. He attended Minnesota State University Mankato and graduated in 1974. On August 26, 1972 he married Patricia Roberts of Madelia at the United Methodist Church. He worked at Etter's Grocery Store and Ryter Corporation during and following graduation from college. In 1976, Pat and John became partners in the Etter's Country Inn, which they operated in partnership with his brother Bill, for several years. Thereafter he managed a restaurant in Burnsville and eventually worked in the finance department of a twin cities automotive dealership. He retired approximately 5 years ago due to health issues. His passion most of his life was the thoroughbred horse. He bought them, sold them, watched them, bet on them and trained them, most of all he always was in love with them. In the 1980's, John passed the trainer license and on either a full time or part time basis trained horses in Minnesota and Arizona. Horses became a passion John and Pat shared over 40 years. His other animal love, were their dogs, Grisby and then Chilukki. They were great companions for John and Pat. John loved to cook and was very knowledgeable about how to prepare certain dishes. He would try new cooking ideas and most of all taught people how to properly cook a prime rib. Sometimes that talk sprinkled with a little horse talk could delay a good meal, but it was worth the wait. His family and friends will sorely miss those talks. John is survived by his wife, Pat (Roberts) Etter; brothers, William (Donita) Etter, Robert (Carol) Etter, James (Janice) Etter, Pamela (Randy) Thomas; parents-in-law, Kendall and Marion Roberts; brothers-in-law, Steven (Marvel) Roberts, David (Alice) Roberts; sister-in-law, Pamela (Roger) Barnlund; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law, Sandra Etter; brother-in-law, Douglas Johnson, and nephew, Craig Roberts.
