John Harrison Bonham was born on May 8, 1954, in Danville, Illinois, the son of Larry and Louise (Sowinski) Bonham. He graduated from Douglas High School at Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota in 1972. He then attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota and graduated in 1978 with a bachelor's degree in both Geography and Psychology.

On June 17, 1979, he was united in marriage to Donna Radtke in Aberdeen, South Dakota. John was a proud Gunnery Sergeant of the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1984 through 2004. He was an electro-optical ordinance specialist and was well known on both coasts as "Johnny Optics." John truly loved the Marine Corps and every solider he met throughout his 20 years of service. John loved anything and everything about guns and was known as a sharpshooter.

If he wasn't at the gun range, John would be outside tending to his "yard of the month." He always looked forward to the nights with the marine buddies and throwing darts.

He is survived by his wife Donna Bonham; daughter Katrina Bonham and granddaughter Olivia Mayeaux, all of Springfield; stepson Jordan Radtke and his fiancé Jill Halvorson of Sanborn; step-grandchildren Trenton Halvorson (Jolyssa) and Devon (Dustyn) McClendon; great grandchildren Hunter and Raylyn from Westbrook, MN. John is also survived by his siblings - Dawn Skipp, Rebecca Bonham, Steve Bonham and Chris Bonham. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, brother Larry Bonham and stepson Jeromy Radtke.
