Jerry Burton Ommodt

Jerry Ommodt, 81, of rural Butterfield, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Tuesday May 16, 2023, at Mayo Health Systems in St James. A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2023, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Sturm Funeral Home in St. James and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 26, 2023, at 11:00 AM at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in rural Odin. Interment will be at St. Olaf Lutheran Cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home, St. James Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

Jerry Burton Ommodt was born to J. Arthur and Esther (Fisman) Ommodt in St James, MN on June 4th, 1941. He grew up and continued to live on the family farm south of Butterfield until the time of his death. He attended Butterfield School and was part of the graduating Class of 1959. Jerry was drafted in 1960 and served 6 years in the Minnesota Army National Guard as a Survey Specialist. Jerry farmed for over 40 years until his retirement in 2000.

Jerry was active and always present at the Butterfield Threshing Bee. Jerry and his father Art restored several older tractors and oil pulls, many of these are still on display and can be seen in the building he partially funded to build. Jerry was a simple, quiet man with a sense of humor that you had to listen carefully for but was there. He enjoyed going out to eat, watching the stock market, and especially hunting out antiques and treasurers at auctions and secondhand stores throughout southern Minnesota. He loved to travel the country and see nature’s beauty and would have liked to travel more. He enjoyed planting a garden and eating what it produced, even though mother nature was not always on his side. His quiet demeanor and compassionate soul will be missed.

Jerry is survived by his cousins, Duane Ommodt of Odin, MN, LuAnn (Dan) Souer, of Milaca, MN, Doug (Cindy) Ommodt of Montevideo, MN, Dale Ommodt of Spicer, MN, Brad (Valerie) Ommodt of Butterfield, MN, Mavis Lenning, of Odin, MN, Bruce Pankratz of Wisconsin, and Lowell Fast of California, and other relatives and friends.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents.
