Irene Nelson

Harriet Nelson, age 95, of Darfur, died on Saturday, October 29, 2011, at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center in St. James. Irene Harriet Shellum was born June 21, 1916 at Fosston, MN, the daughter of Theodore and Anna (Oren) Shellum. She was united in marriage to Chester Chet H. Nelson at the Shellum farm in Adrian Township on March 16, 1947. They farmed near Sveadahl for a time, then moved to Darfur. She helped her husband with his carpentry business and cleaned houses. She loved gardening, fishing and watching the birds. She was a loving caregiver to her mother and her husband during their illnesses before their deaths. After Chester's passing, she lived alone in her home in Darfur until she was 94 years old. She moved into Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center in St. James in December 2010. She is survived by her son Murray of Darfur, 2 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, sisters Grace Barns of Evan, Marlis Schwartz of New Ulm, brother Lester Shellum of New Ulm, her son-in-law LaMonte Sterbuck and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband in 1992, her daughter Ardis in 1993 and sisters Arvis and Elaine and brothers Tollof and Walter.
