Iona Retka

Iona Marie Fox Schmid Retka was born on March 14, 1914, in Comfrey, MN, the daughter of Leo Sr. and Kathryn (May) Fox. She had lived in Wanda, Sanborn, Redwood Falls, Dawson, Princeton, Brooklyn Center, and Cold Spring. Iona worked as a dress maker, a sales clerk, a bookkeeper, and a nurses assistant. She was a member of the St. Boniface Church in Cold Spring, MN and a former member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Sanborn, MN, a member of the Rosary Society, and Daughters of Isabella. She loved horses and horse races. Iona enjoyed flower gardening, reading, cooking and baking, sewing, bird watching and in her younger years, enjoyed fishing, and pheasant and deer hunting. Iona died on Thursday, August 22, 2013 at her home in Cold Spring at the age of 99 years. She is survived by her children - Richard and his wife Jacqueline Schmid of Ramsey, MN and Steven Schmid of Cold Spring, MN; 16 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; 5 step grandchildren; 8 step great grandchildren; sisters - Anna Mae Norcutt of Sanborn, MN and Eulalie Catherine Kircher of Sanborn, MN; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; 1st husband - Raymond Schmid; 2nd husband - Norbert Retka ; a son - Anthony Schmid; grandsons - Christopher and Patrick; a granddaughter - Janene; and brothers - Leander, Elmo, Ephraim, Otis, Leo Jr, Leroy, and George Fox.
