Hilda Meta Wickmann was born June 29, 1912 in Springfield, the daughter of Theodore and Meta (Schenk) Kroening. She attended Springfield Public School. On November 24, 1932, Hilda was united in marriage to Rein Wickmann of Sanborn at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Springfield. The couple enjoyed 64 years of marriage. The marriage was blessed with four children. Hilda and Rein worked in close partnership, first in farming in the Sanborn area and later in the Westbrook and Walnut Grove area. In 1964 they purchased a hardware store in Walnut Grove and operated a hardware, plumbing and heating business until 1959. A home on Lake Minnewaska near Glenwood was purchased in the early 1960's along with a lakeside superette that served as a convenience stone for area residents. Hilda bake home-made bread, pies and rolls that were considered a treat by her many customers. In their early years of retirement they wintered in Phoenix, AZ and continued to enjoy their lakeside home in the summer. In their later years they moved to Hutchinson before moving to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Sauk Rapids, MN. Hilda enjoyed her family and many friends. She loved to garden and preserve the fruits and vegetables from her garden. She also loved a good game of cards and their travels during retirement. Hilda died on Monday, October 31, 2005 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Sauk Rapids, MN. She is survived by her sons - Robert and wife Bobbie of St. Petersburg, FL, Richard and wife Carol of Trinity, FL, Roger and wife Peggy of Walker, MN, and Randall and wife Arlene of Sauk Rapids, MN; 7 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband - Rein; brothers - Arthur, Julius, Ervin, and Alfred Kroening and her great grandson - Ross Wickmann.
