Hertha Holland

Hertha (Kunkel) Holland, daughter of Julius and Paulina (Zimmer) Kunkel, was born on June 19, 1921 in Mountain Lake, MN. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mountain Lake. She received her education at Cottonwood County District 12 and 32 country schools. On June 15, 1945 she was united in marriage to Leonard Holland in St. James, MN. They farmed southwest of St. James for about 6 years before moving to Odin, MN where Leonard operated the Standard Oil Station. They moved to Butterfield, MN in 1954 where she worked as a school cook, restaurant cook and operated an in-home day-care service for several years. Leonard died on August 30, 1993 and Hertha continued to live in Butterfield until 2011 when she moved to St. James. In April 2015 she moved to Kingsley Shores Senior Living in Lakeville, MN where she resided until her death. Hertha died on 12/27/2018 at the age of 97 ½ years. Hertha enjoyed visiting family and friends, gardening, canning and keeping in contact with her 7 brothers and 7 sisters and always a good hot cup of coffee within reach. She was a long-time member of First Lutheran Church in Butterfield where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Ladies Aid. Hertha is survived by her three sons, Orville (Muriel) of Minneapolis, MN, Lowell (Lynda) of Apple Valley, MN, Bruce (Carol) of Ramsey, MN, and daughter Marlys Behnke of Appleton, WI; grandchildren Sheri (Greg) Chronis, Scott (Kaytie) Behnke, Amy (Jeremy) Ryan, Matthew (Michelle) Holland, Nicole Holland (Carl Tilleson), Emily Holland, Joanna Holland and Kelsey Holland (Daniel Hishon); great-grandchildren Zachary, Maxwell, Samuel and Elizabeth Behnke; Trevor, Bryce and Kameron Chronis; Evan and Alexander Ryan; Andrew and Kole Holland, Aiden Tilleson; Justine and Gavin Nutter; sister Augusta Heintzleman of Springfield, MO; brother-in-law Milo (Kay) Holland; sister-in-law Lenora Kunkel, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Leonard; son-in-law Roger Behnke; grandson Andy Holland; brothers Gottfried, Arthur, Christian, August, Leonard, Bernhart and Herbert; and sisters Amelia (died in infancy), Bertha, Martha, Amanda, Alvina, Laura and Helen. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to First Lutheran Church, Butterfield or Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Odin.
