Herbert Morton 'Mort' Schulz

January 8, 1919 — July 31, 2015

Herbert Morton "Mort" Schulz was born on January 8th, 1919 in Lake Crystal, MN. He was the son of Herbert J. and Winiferd (Hart) Schulz. He attended school at Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial School in Garden City, MN. On June 20th, 1942 he married Eltha Lucile Elkin at the Baptist Parsonage in Lake Crystal, MN. In 1948, the couple moved to their farm 3 miles East of Madelia. They were blessed with three children - Gary, Harold and Karla. Mort was a long time farmer, who loved John Deere and Oliver tractors. He spent the majority of his life working in farming but ambitiously tackled many other trades throughout his life. Mort was a true "jack-of-all-trades", gifted at building or repairing almost anything. In addition to his work on the farm, Mort also moonlighted as a carpenter and delivered furniture for Hayden Furniture, as well working as an assistant to the funeral director at the Sandburg Funeral Home in Madelia. He also worked as a mechanic for Jose Motors, Soreide, Swenson, and Olson's motors for 13 winters. Even after retirement, Mort continued to work on a nearby farm. He restored and rebuilt furniture in his spare time, along with building many types of working ornaments for his yard. Mort built a moving replica of an oil rig, a Dutch wind mill, a water mill, and several wood carved animals that created fun scenes surrounding his home. He also built toys for his grandchildren, including a beautiful doll house for his granddaughter. Mort enjoyed creating model trains and train scenes that he constructed out of items he salvaged from old Christmas decorations. Each train, windmill and structure would move and light up under the detailed craftsmanship of Mort. He was a gifted person who brought love, creativity and patience to all who knew and loved him. Mort is survived by his wife, Eltha (Elkin) Schulz; children, Gary L. (Ginny) Schulz of Lakeville, MN, Harold D. (Barb Kettering) Schulz of Apple Valley, MN, Karla R. (Bob Angus) Grev of Madelia, MN; sister, Ellen Duncklee of FL; grandchildren, Justin M. (Melissa) Grev, Andrea M. (Wade) Johnson; great-grandchildren, Dylan, Lauryn, Brayden, Quinntyn Grev, and Emmy Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Alice (Lloyd) Burmister.
