Herbert died on Sunday, April 6, 2008 at the Sleepy Eye Care Center at the age of 83 years. There will be a Parish Prayer Service on Thursday at 4:00 PM at the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye. Herbert Ferdinand Fischer was born June 23, 1924 in rural Sleepy Eye, the son of Frank and Clara (Bruckbauer) Fischer. He attended country school and St. Mary's Catholic School in Sleepy Eye. Herb entered the U.S. Army on February 1, 1945 and served until November 18, 1946. Herb was united in marriage to Irene Spaeth on April 30, 1947 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Morgan, MN. The couple farmed in Home Township until 1961 when they purchased a farm in Sigel Township and later moved to a farm in Stark Township in 1981. Herb retired and moved into Sleepy Eye in 1997. Herb was extremely proud of receiving his Honorary High School Diploma in 1998. He was a lifetime member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, Catholic Aid Association, Knights of Columbus, and the Sleepy Eye Sportsmen's Club. Herb served on the Country School Board #209, Stark Baseball Board, AMPI Board, and was an officer with the Eagles Club. Herb was also a member of the VFW and American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, trapshooting, walking in the woods, reading, fishing, playing cards and the occasional Sunday drive. He is survived by his wife - Irene Fischer of Sleepy Eye; children - James and wife JoAnne Fischer of Sleepy Eye, Carol and husband Jerry Waibel of Searles, Dan and wife Debbie Fischer of Sleepy Eye, Kathy and husband Mike Morris of Mankato, JoAnn and husband Kurt Eischen of Comfrey, Larry and wife Debra Fischer of Sleepy Eye, and Donna and husband Kevin Dewanz of New Ulm; 26 grandchildren; 5 step grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and 8 step great grandchildren; brothers - Arthur Fischer of Sauk Centre; Sylvester and wife Lavon Fischer of Lafayette, and Benjamin and wife Genny Fischer of Sleepy Eye; and sisters - Veronica Simon of Morgan, Rosemary and husband Hilary Tauer of Windom, and Olivia and husband Howard Binder of Gibbon. He is preceded in death by his parents; a great grandchild - McKenzie Waibel; brothers - Edwin, Emil, and Wilbert; and sister - Louise Schmitz.
