Henrietta Gerdena Menken was born on the family farm, near Mt. Lake, on November 26, 1922, the daughter of Louie Hattie (Elsing) Menken. She grew up in the Mt. Lake area where she attended rural country school. She worked as a housekeeper for a couple years before getting married. She married Menno Hulzebos on November 19, 1942 in Mt. Lake. Menno was in the military and stationed in California, so following their marriage the couple lived in California. They moved back to Minnesota following Menno's service and made their home in Mt. Lake where they raised their family. Henrietta worked at Butterfield Foods, Tony Downs and Campbell's Soup for several years before going to work at Hiebert's Greenhouse where she worked for some 35 years. She had been an active member of the Christian Reformed Church, served on ladies aide up until 2001 when the church closed she was currently attending the Refuge Church of Mountain Lake. Henrietta enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking and baking bread with her grandkids. She also enjoyed crocheting and knitting. Following Menno's death in 2008, she moved to the Laker Apartments where she enjoyed her new friends and activities. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren and looked forward to their visits. She is survived by her children; Allen (Phyllis) Hulzebos of Sioux Falls, SD, Dennis (Reva) Hulzebos of Mt. Lake, Marlene (Craig) Olson of Sioux Falls, SD, 7 grandchildren; Valerie Whitehead and her fianc Mike Anderson, Ryan (Carie) Hulzebos, Lance (Leah) Hulzebos, Amberly Hulzebos, Travis (Shawna) Hulzebos, Nate Olson, Lindsay (Victor) Kottwitz, 10 great-grandchildren, siblings; Duane (Elsie) Menken of Ft. Morgan, CO, Marcella Barlow of Flagstaff, AZ, Delmar Menken of Rapid City, SD, and Susan (Jerry) Neufeld of Kasota. She is preceded in death by her husband, granddaughter; Kelsey Hulzebos, 2 great-granddaughters, brother; LaVern Menken and sister; Gertie Radtke.
