Helen Amanda Marie Schmid was born June 18, 1911, in Ottertail County, Minnesota the daughter of Henry A.E. and Martha A.A. (Boese) Stover. Due to the death of her father, she moved to Springfield with her mother and brother to live with relatives in 1926. She graduated from Springfield High School in 1929. Helen worked at Tholes Sweet Shop in Springfield for 5 years where she met Gilbert. She married Gilbert C. Schmid on August 28, 1934. The couple farmed in Bashaw Township until retiring and moving to Comfrey in 1981. Helen enjoyed wintering in Arizona for 27 years, loved being with her family and friends, feeding and watching the birds, gardening, and having coffee with friends. She was an avid Twin and Viking fan for many years. She was a member of the Floratennial Garden Club, St. Paul Catholic Church and CCW, and the Comfrey Hospital Auxiliary where she chaired the Comfrey Hospital cookbook in 1965. Helen made Brickstone Manor in Comfrey her home the past 4 years where she enjoyed playing Bunco and Crazy 8's with the residents. Helen Schmid died Wednesday, January 26, 2011, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield at the age of 99 years. She is survived by daughters- Martha (Wendell) Fredin of Comfrey, Dorothy (Thomas) Maloney of Eden Prairie, and Marianne (Stanley) Schotzko of Comfrey; 14 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; 2 step-great-grandchildren; 1 step-great-great grandchild; and sister-in-law Irene Stover. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Gilbert in 2001; a grandchild in infancy; 3 great-grandchildren; brother Arnold Stover; and son-in-law Norbert Suess.
