Helen Kathryn Schmid was born December 5, 1906, in Springfield, MN, the daughter of Mark and Catherine (Schumacher) Callanan. A lifetime resident of Springfield, Helen graduated from St. Raphael's High School in 1922. She attended Mankato Technical College and was employed at the Springfield Community Hospital for 21 years. Helen was united in marriage to Clement J. Schmid on November 7, 1927, in Springfield. She was a member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church, the church choir, St. Monica's Court, and St. Anne's CCW. Helen was a charter member of the Garden Study Club, a former 4-H Leader, and a volunteer at St. John Lutheran Home. She also belonged to a Bridge Club and volunteered for other various organizations. Helen loved her family, friends, and flowers. Her favorite saying was, I have seen yesterday, I'm not afraid of tomorrow, and I love today. Helen Kathryn Schmid died Tuesday, June 12, 2007, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield at the age of 100 years. She is survived by her children- Clement J. Schmid IV and wife Mary Ann of Enon, OH, Dr. Michael R. Schmid and wife Jeanne of Longmont, CO, and Nancy Ellen Herzog and husband Paul of Dayton, OH; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 7 step-great, great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Clement; and brothers- Joseph and wife Loretta Callanan, and William and wife Marie Callanan.
