Hazel Rohwer

Hazel Neuman Rohwer, age 103, of St. James died on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Society in St. James. Funeral services will be 10:30am, Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at the United Methodist Church in St. James with Rev. Clinton Firstbrook, III officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Tuesday beginning at 9:30am. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in St. James. Hazel Olwen Sorenson was born May 14, 1913 in rural Mankato, MN the daughter of Ole and Margaret (James) Sorenson. Hazel graduated high school, spent 2 years at teachers college and worked towards her four year degree in Education. She married Arthur Neuman on November 26, 1937. Hazel was a school teacher her entire career. She taught in Butterfield, before the consolidation, Osseo for two years and after Arthur's death she taught in Odin and back to Butterfield, after the consolidation, and retired in 1978 after 30 years. She was the editor-in-chief of the Mankato Teachers paper for several years. On November 6, 1982 she married Elmer "Shorty" Rohwer. She served as principle of Butterfield Elementary School, was a Sunday School Teacher, church choir member, severed on several church committees and delivered meal-on-wheels. Hazel enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, traveling, playing bridge, doing cross stitch and watching sports on tv. Hazel is survived by her children; Nancy Avery of East Wenatchee, WA, Kathryn (Wayne) Newman of Rosemount, MN, Prudy (Wayne) Anderson of New Richmond, WI, Bryan Rohwer of Chandler, AZ, Deanne (Mike) Strege of Sioux Falls, SD, 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by two husbands, parents, sister Audrey "Babe" and Bud Reed, and a son-in-law Don Avery and daughter-in-law Brenda Rohwer.
