Harland LeDale Hultgren was born May 13, 1928, to Lloyd and Minnie (Westman) Hultgren on the family farm near West Sveadahl. He was baptized and confirmed at West Sveadahl Lutheran Church. Harland attended country school district 37 and graduated from St. James High School in 1947. He stayed at home and farmed along side his dad and started custom corn shelling in 1948. Harland met his future wife Lois Haynes in comfrey while roller skating. They were married on September 17, 1950 at Salem Lutheran Church in Comfrey. Together they lived on the family farm raising their 5 sons and 1 daughter. They were grain farmers and raised chickens, cows and pigs. Harland was active in the Sveadahl church; singing in the choir, Sunday School superintendent, church council, cemetery board as president and a youth leader. He was also active as a leader of Nelson Wide Awake, 4-H, the Godahl Day parade and as a Watonwan County commissioner. In 1985 he and Lois moved to the Twin Cities and he worked for Unisys and Honeywell as a security guard. In 1996 they returned to St. James and Harland worked for several farmers for fall harvest and later for Greenview Rest. When West Sveadahl Church closed, he and Lois became members of Augustana Lutheran Church in St. James. Harland enjoyed spending time with the guys at the Godahl Store and later at McDonalds. His favorite way to pass the time was driving around looking at the fields and farm machinery. His greatest joy was his 6 children, 14 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren and going to their school activities. Harland Hultgren was called to his heavenly home, with his family by his side at Pleasantview-Good Samaritan Society on October 13, 2017 at the age of 89. He is survived by his wife Lois; children - Dean (Patti) Hultgren of Pharr, TX, Bruce (Diane) Hultgren of St. James, Rick (Kathy) Hultgren of Waterville, Jerry (Jeanie) Hultgren of Sioux Falls, SD, Nancy (David IV) Cassin of Chaska and Allan (Diane) Hultgren of Billings, MT; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and sister Idelle Schottle of Comfrey. He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter Natalie Hultgren; daughter-in-law Lora Hultgren; and brother-in-law Harold Schottle. Memorials preferred to Augustana Church window project, West Sveadahl Cemetery or the donors choice.
