Gladys Bertha Leopold was born October 15, 1917, in Redwood County, the daughter of William and Amelia (Pankonin) Pooch. She attended School District #28 in Cottonwood County and was united in marriage to Lloyd Leopold on September 11, 1935, in Lamberton. The couple farmed in rural Sanborn for 3 years, in rural Avoca for 3 years, and for 37 years near Bingham Lake. They then retired and moved to Sanborn in 1980. Gladys was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid. She enjoyed playing cards, sewing, cooking, baking, and gardening. Gladys especially enjoyed visiting with people, working, and watching the Minnesota Twins. She will always be remembered for making the best turkey and pies! Gladys Bertha Leopold died Thursday, September 10, 2009, at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 91 years. She is survived by her children- Shirley Blackstad of St. James, Marian and husband Carol Rieffer of Sioux Falls, Ruth and husband Floyd Knakmuhs of Westbrook, and Norma and husband Jerry Burns of Mankato; 15 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; brother George Pooch of Lamberton; sister Jean Halter of Redwood Falls; and 2 sisters-in-law. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lloyd in 1982; brothers- Leslie and Delmar Pooch; and sisters- Alice Krinke and Mabel Hoehne.
