Gerald Schumacher

December 3, 1923 — February 23, 2005

Gerald Raymond Schumacher was born on December 3, 1923 in Leavenworth Township, Brown County. He attended country school in Leavenworth Township and following school he worked with his father on the family farm. Gerald entered the U.S. Army on January 24, 1945 and was honorably discharged on December 1, 1946. On June 15, 1948 he married Alyce Krzmarzick at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, MN. The couple farmed in Leavenworth Township until 1960 when they moved to a farm in Adrian Township. Gerald retired from dairy and field farming in 1981 and they moved into Comfrey. Gerald developed a great love for raising Draft Horses and enjoyed going to antique machinery auctions. He enjoyed working in his leather shop and refurbishing leather harnesses. He played baseball for Springfield and Leavenworth Western Minnie Baseball League. Gerald was a member of the Northern and Southern Association of Draft Horses; Prairie Land Fly Wheelers 2 Cylinder Club; the Sleepy Eye VFW; St. Paul Catholic Church in Comfrey, and a member of the Catholic Aid Association. He loved to watch the Minnesota Twins and will be remembered for his great sense of humor. Gerald died on Wednesday, February 23, 2005 at the Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato at the age of 81 years. He is survived by his wife - Alyce Schumacher of Comfrey; children - Marlene and husband Clay Engman of Pine City, MN, Karen and husband Ron Kauffmann of Babbitt, MN, Loren and wife Gean Schumacher of Comfrey; Lyle and wife Meri Schumacher of Comfrey; Diane and husband Frank Samlaska of Eagle Lake, MN, and Susan and husband Dan Alleven of Good Thunder, MN; 11 grandchildren; 1 great grandson; brothers - Dennis and wife Marlys Schumacher of Springfield and Father Paul Schumacher of Appleton, MN; sisters - Eileen Braun of New Ulm, Mary and husband Frank Griffin of Minneapolis, Margaret and husband Robert Bauer of New Ulm, and Monica and husband Don Clark of Oronoco, MN; sisters-in-law - Marlys Schumacher of Springfield and Francis Schumacher of Springfield and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; brothers - Daniel Schumacher and Adrian Schumacher; and brother-in-law - Victor Braun and Frank McCarty.
