Freeman was born at home to Glen & Edna (Genrich) Hoppe on May 24, 1939 in Waverly Township (Truman), Martin County, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at St Paul's Lutheran Church in Truman. At sixteen years old he started farming full-time after his oldest brother was seriously injured in a farming accident. Freeman met and dated Marian Swanson of St. James and they were married September 17, 1960 at Augustana Lutheran Church in St. James. They briefly lived in Northrop, before moving to a farm north of St. James. Over the years, Freeman loved farming, hunting, fishing, summers at the cabin up north, and in later years having coffee at the Hometown with his buddies. He always made sure that the cookie jar was full of chocolate chip cookies he baked for the grand kids. Nothing brought a bigger smile on his face or was more important to him than his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Marian; daughter, Terri (Mike) Kircher of St James; son, James (Darla) Hoppe of St James; daughter, Kelly (Brad) Hanson of Bingham Lake; grandchildren, Katelyn (Mark) Everhart, Dani (Carl) Lind, Rachel (Stephan) Melson, Ethan (Emily) Hoppe, Logan (Erin) Hoppe, Colin (Madison Harmon) Hoppe, Landon (Samantha Maul) Hoppe, Jenna (Cody) Hauser, Vance (Kaitie) Blomgren, Stuart (Kyeanna) Blomgren, Dylan Hanson & Dayton Hanson; great-grandchildren, Frederick, Phoebe & Lucille Lind, Elliot, Oliver & Micah Hoppe, Isla Hoppe, Stella, Collins & Hayes Hauser, Luella Blomgren, Kesleigh & Beckham Blomgren; and a special nephew, Bruce (Joanne) Sharp. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Carol Hoppe of Eden Prairie, Suzann Olson of St James and Myrna (Roger) Seaman of American Fork, Utah as well as many nieces and nephews.

Freeman is preceded in death by his grandson, Ross Blomgren; parents, Glen & Edna Hoppe; siblings, Milford (Lois) Hoppe, Marvin Hoppe, Shirley (Bob) Thate and Virginia (David) Looft; in-laws, Kathryn (Gene) Bricks and Richard Swanson; also several nieces and nephews.
