Fern Flaig died on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield. Fern was a long time resident of Sanborn, MN. She was preceded in death by husband Lorraine Flaig in 1994 and brother - Hilbert Hansen. Fern was born on July 20, 1917 in Brookville Township, Redwood County, the daughter of Harvey and Anna (Johnson) Hansen. She attended elementary school in Evan, MN and graduated from Sleepy Eye Public High School in 1935. She attended Normal School Training in Sleepy Eye for one year before teaching for seven years in rural schools. She married Lorraine Flaig on January 5, 1943 and farmed in the Sanborn area where they raised 7 children. In 1966 she accepted a teaching position at St. Mathias Catholic School in Wanda and continued her education at Mankato State University from which she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education in 1973. She continued teaching at St Mathias in Wanda and St. Anna's in Wabasso until her retirement from teaching in 1984. She made her home in Sanborn in 1980 and then moved to Riverside Homestead Cooperative in Springfield in 1988. In 2006 she took up residency at St. John Lutheran Home until her death. Fern enjoyed family gatherings, children, reading, playing cards, camping, and watching the Twins. She belonged to the Retired Teachers Association, Extension and participated in numerous church activities. She is survived by her seven children JoAnn (Jan) Dallenbach of Farmington, MN, Kathryn (Dave) Collins of Hickory, NC, Patricia (Russ) Riley of St. Cloud, MN, Jean (Roger) Crummett of Atlanta, GA, Rita (Gorde) Olness of Cloquet, MN, Steve (Meridith) Flaig of Lamberton, MN, and Lori (Tim Sollid) Flaig of Rosemount, MN; 14 granchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.
