Ethel Steffen

Ethel Marcelia Batalden was born July 6, 1912 on the family farm in Highwater Township to M.O. and Hilda (Quam) Batalden. She attended country school District 3 through the 8th grade and graduated from Lamberton High School in 1930. Ethel was united in marriage to Allen Steffen on March 3, 1940 at Highwater Lutheran Church.. The couple farmed northwest of Sanborn until Allen's death in 1982. Ethel then moved to Lamberton. She was a former member of Highwater Lutheran Church where she served as organist for 15 years. Ethel was a current member of Zion Lutheran Church in Sanborn and sang in the church choir. She volunteered at Valley View Manor where she played for services for over 25 years. Ethel was a member of Bridge Club, volunteered at the nursing home, and enjoyed reading, playing cards, and flower gardening. She is survived by daughter Cheryl Steffen of St. James; son Merlin and wife Gloria Steffen of Buffalo; 3 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Allen; and brothers- Omer, Emrud, Leonard and Rueben Batalden.
