Esther Fast

Esther Tina Fast went to be with her Lord on Friday, March 22, 2019 at the age of 94 years at the Sanford Hospice House, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Visitation will be on Friday, April 19, 2019 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Sturm Funeral Home, Mountain Lake Chapel and will continue on Saturday from 9:30 am until 10:30 am at the Sturm Funeral Home, Mountain Lake Chapel. Service will be held at the Sturm Funeral Home, Mountain Lake Chapel, on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at 10:30 am. The clergy will be Pastor Merwin Dick. Interment will be at the Mountain Lake City Cemetery in Mountain Lake, Minnesota. Esther Tina Penner was born on September 4, 1924 to Anna (Teichroew) and Peter I. Penner at the family farm home in Midway Township. After graduation from Mountain Lake High School, she attended Mankato State Teachers College (now Minnesota Sate University Mankato) receiving her Curriculum in Elementary Education degree in 1945. Esther then taught in one room schoolhouses for seven years in Carson Township and for the Westbrook School District. During that time, she met a farmer, Peter A. Fast, marrying him on June 27, 1952. Their first home was on a farm in Carson Township. After their first child was born, they moved to their farm five miles northeast of Mountain Lake. Pete died in 1993 but Esther continued to live on the farm. She moved to town after her 90th birthday celebration. As an active lifelong member of Mt. Lake's First Mennonite Church, faith guided her life. Many of Esther's lifelong skills and passions were nurtured as she grew up on her parents' farm, including hard work, meal making, baking, sewing, quilting and gardening. She especially enjoyed making traditional Mennonite foods such as zwieback, verenike, crullers and many varieties of peppernuts. She was always ready to play a board or card games. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Peter, her daughter, Luanne Fast. sisters, Verna Penner and Lila Neufeld, brothers, Alton and Melroy as well as numerous brothers and sisters-in-law. Esther will be greatly missed by her children, Loren (Lorraine), Loretta (Dave Harger). Lynette (Tom Ensz) and her 11 grandchildren and 5 great grand children.
