Ervin was the son of the late John and Elizabeth (Dick) Loewen. He was born on October 7, 1926 on a farm three miles west of Mountain Lake. When he was three years old he moved with his parents and sisters to the farm one mile south of town. On June 26, 1946, Ervin married Frances Ruby Harder. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing ball, and helping with work on the farm. where he lived for 76 years. Ervin was baptized at First Mennonite Church on May 1, 1944, later transferring his membership to Lakeview Gospel Church. He served on different committees and was the trustee for a number of years. He sang in the church choir and Men's Chorus. He was a member of Mountain Lake Gospel Singers for many years. He enjoyed playing the harmonica. Ervin is survived by his children: Vernelle (Parviz) Loewen Pakravan of Wilmette, IL, Mark (Patty) Loewen of Mountain Lake, Charles (Paula) Loewen,of LaHaina, Maui, HI and Douglas (Cynthia Camlin) Loewen of Bellingham, WA; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; brothers-in-law sisters-in-law: Leo (Gladys) Harder and Leslie (Gladys) Harder, all of Mountain Lake; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances; and sisters: Verna Fast, Elsie Klassen, Dorothy Loewen and Evelyn Klassen.
