Elverne Garner

Elverne Garner, age 86, of St. James died at his home on Thursday, August 5, 2021, surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be 11am, Friday, August 13, 2021, at Hosanna Free Lutheran Church in St. James with his son-in-law, Pastor Paul Hoover officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in St. James with full military honors provided by the St. James Veterans Honor Guard. Elverne Eugene Garner was born on September 9, 1934, in St. James to parents Clifford and Esther (Mausling) Garner. Elverne grew up in St. James and graduated from St. James High School. On September 29, 1956, he married Louise Annette Minnie at Sanborn. Elverne worked at Butterfield Foods until he retired in 2003. He was a life long resident of the St. James area and Highland Park Baptist Church. After his retirement, he enjoyed traveling with Louise on her Christian Women's speaking trips. He enjoyed dabbling with woodworking and craft projects. Church was a big part of Elverne's life. In the later years, following Louise' death in 2013, his dog Gizmo became a important part of his life. Elverne is survived by his 5 daughters; Cathy (Reuben) Meyer, Cindy (Paul) Hoover, Laure Standerwick, Tamara (Tom) Bergeron, and Julie (Dave) Cook, and 16 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, special friends Pete, Dianne and Gizmo. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and granddaughter Rachelle Hammerling. The family is so thankful for the compassion and kindness shown by the staff of Madelia Home Care and Mayo Hospice.
