Elmo Aspelund

March 3, 1921 — March 13, 2012

Elmo Harold was born on March 3, 1921 in St James to Seth and Julie (Shellum) Aspelund. He was baptized on March 28, 1921and confirmed on June 9, 1935 at Albion Lutheran Church and attended country school. From 1942 to 1946, Elmo served in the US Army. He was wounded in German and received the Purple Heart. Upon returning to civilian life, he studied auto mechanics at Mankato Vocational Technical College. After graduating, he worked for the Case dealership in Sleepy Eye. He began farming in 1950 and on April 24, 1954 he married Dorothy Mecklenburg in New Ulm. He was widowed on January 9, 1999. Elmo was a member of Albion Lutheran Church, the VFW, the American Legion, and DAV. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling, especially spending winters in Mesa, AZ with his wife. Elmo Aspelund is survived by son Dean (Sharon Baker), St James; grandchildren: Ryan, St James, Terry, Mankato, Leigh, St James; siblings: Delores (Sidney) Joramo, Hanska, Marjorie Margie (Donavan Pete) Peterson, Burnsville, and Verdell (Florine) Aspelund, Madelia; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his wife Dorothy, Elmo was preceded in death by daughter Lois in 2006; brothers Seldon and Ivan; and sister, Ives Wilson.
