Elmer Johnson was born November 26, 1925, to George and Anna (Raveling) Johnson in LeMars, IA. He lived in the Remsen, IA area and attended school near Remsen. The family moved to Highwater Township, Cottonwood County where Elmer continued his education through the 8th grade and helped on the family farm. Elmer was a WW II Veteran. He enlisted in the US Navy on April 29, 1944, and received his Honorable Discharge on May 19, 1946. He originally wanted to join the Marines but they were full so he joined the Navy. He served as a Seaman 2nd Class, SV6, USNR on the destroyer USS Meade in the South Pacific. Their ship escorted the USS Missouri for the signing of the Peace Treaty. He didn't talk about his war experiences a lot, but shared his stories at times. Elmer was proud to have served his country and he stated if he had to, he would do it all over again. Elmer was united in marriage to LaNette Arnsdorf on June 11, 1948, at the EUB Church in Lamberton. Elmer built houses with Harvey Keen, drove truck for Dan Dugan out of Sioux Falls, moved to Delhi and ran a turkey brooder, and attended classes from the University of Minnesota. In 1958/1959 they moved to rural Lamberton where Elmer farmed full time. In 1976 they moved off the farm and built a home in Lamberton and continued to farm until his retirement in 2001. Elmer was a quiet, strong-willed and hard-working man who loved his family. Elmer enjoyed archery and horseshoes in his younger days, woodworking, fishing, gardening, playing cards, watching tv programs, and bowling. He was a member of the Lamberton United Methodist Church, American Legion, a shareholder of Farmers Livestock and helped organize and start the business. He was also served as president of the Shipping Association. Most recently, he loved going for rides and an ice cream cone from D.Q., but most of all, he loved to be around his family and have them close to him. Elmer was a quiet man, but when he spoke he said alot. He had a big heart and will be sadly missed. Elmer's laughs, smiles, waves, and words of wisdom as a father will forever be remembered. His garden now stands empty. Blessed be his memory.
