Elizabeth Betty Lynn Schmidt was born on October 19, 1921 in Sleepy Eye, MN the daughter of Jacob Tressa (McGuire) Breigenzer. She grew up in Sleepy Eye and graduated from Sleepy Eye High School in 1939. She married Willard Shorty Schmidt on June 22, 1950 in Sleepy Eye. The couple made their home in Sleepy Eye where Betty worked in the payroll department at Del Monte and as a bookkeeper at Goettig Accounting. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. Betty loved Sleepy Eye and worked hard at improving or contributing to the community. She was a chairperson on the Sleepy Eye Lake Dredging Committee, Served the Sleepy Eye Centennial Committee, especially with the Pageant, was a charter member of the Sleepy Eye Community Band and later a member of the New Ulm Municipal Band, member of the Sleepy Eye Historical Society, Depot Preservation Committee and the Sleepy Eye Museum. Survivors include, her husband Willard Shorty Schmidt of Sleepy Eye, sons, Richard (Jean) Schmidt of Eagan and Robert Schmidt of Geelong, Victoria, Australia, two granddaughters, Abby and Emily and sister, Virginia Youngman of Centuria, WI. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother-in-law, Fred Fritz Youngman and nephew, Dean Youngman.
