Elizabeth Fischer

September 7, 1917 — May 22, 2008

There will be a Parish Prayer Service on Monday at 6:00 p.m. at the nursing home. Elizabeth Marie Fischer was born September 7, 1917, in Mulligan Township, Brown County. She was the second oldest of nine children of Joseph and Theresa (Schumacher) Fischer. Elizabeth grew up on the family farm and attended school district #42. She worked for relatives and neighbors, helping with the children. During World War II, Elizabeth helped her brother farm. She worked hard and could do any type of farm work. When picking corn by hand, she had to walk backwards because she was left-handed. Elizabeth also tended several hives of bees to ease the problem of sugar rationing. In later years, she worked as a nanny in Minneapolis for 27 years. Elizabeth entered St. John's Lutheran Home in December of 1999. While at the home, she was involved in many things. She belonged to the Cheerful Chimers, participated in many games and activities, and enjoyed cutting quilt blocks and coupons. She was a member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church and belonged to the CCW. Elizabeth Fischer, age 90 of Springfield, formerly of Minneapolis, died Thursday, May 22, 2008, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield. She is survived by sisters, Josephine Lang of Springfield, Dorothy Fischer of New Ulm, and Teresa Huiras of Apple Valley; sister-in-law, Jean Fischer of Sioux Falls; and 26 nieces and nephews. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Alfred, John and Valentine; sisters, Gertrude Hillesheim and Sr. Mryna Fischer; nieces, Julie Huiras and Cathy Gloe; nephew Jim Huiras; and brothers-in-law, Kenneth Hillesheim, Melvin Huiras, and Philip Lang.
