Edwin Windschitl

March 1, 1929 — March 11, 2012

Edwin Frank Windschitl was born on March 1, 1929, in Mulligan Township, the son of Edmund and Martha (Schroepfer) Windschitl. He attended country school district #42 through the 8th grade and graduated from Comfrey High School in 1947. Edwin was united in marriage to Ivona Helget on June 18, 1951 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. They lived on a farm east of Comfrey until they retired and moved into Comfrey in 1993. Over the years, he planted 41 corn crops and he raised and cared for - dairy cows, beef cattle, hogs, chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, sheep, numerous cats, and always had a dog or two. He always took pride in providing the best possible care of his animals. In addition to farming, he also worked at the Augustin Butcher Shop for a number of years. Following his retirement, Edwin enjoyed driving the bus for the Comfrey school, floral gardening, woodworking, reading, cooking, and especially spending time with his grandchildren and great granddaughter. He was a lifelong democrat, enjoyed discussing politics and had no trouble telling people if he thought they were right or wrong. Edwin was a district #63 school board member, past Comfrey Lions Club member, served on the St. Paul Church board for 6 years, sang in the church choir for 60 years, served on the Mulligan Township board and acted as treasurer for several years, received the WCCO Good Neighbor award in 1995, and very much enjoyed treasure and antique hunting at various locations. Throughout his life he took comfort and guidance from his Christian faith and died with a rosary in his hands. Edwin loved people and people loved Edwin. He is survived by his wife - Ivona of Comfrey; children - Kenneth (Mary) of Courtland, David (Diane) of Leander, TX, Jeffry (Julie) of Comfrey, and Daniel (Tammy) of New Ulm; grandchildren - Erik, Justin (Rebekah), Angie (Christian), Andrew, John, Lauren, Rachel (Brent), Carly and Adam; great granddaughter - Morgan; siblings - Irene Sprenger of Comfrey, Elaine Haala of Sleepy Eye, Della Schueneman of Mankato, Marcella Sally Holm of New Ulm, Margaret Mickey Fischer of Sleepy Eye and one sister-in-law - Eunice Windschitl of Sleepy Eye.
