Farming was in his blood. As a teenager he began working for a farmer in the Hector area for a number of years. Then he began working with a cousin milking cows, raising beets, beans, corn and hay. This gave him support to buy his own tractor and begin farming on his own. He farmed in the Fairfax area for a number of years.

On July 14,1973, he was wed to Linda Ulmen in a ceremony at St. John the Baptist church in Mankato, Minnesota. As a devoted wife, Linda cooked meals, delivering them to the field when necessary and helped out with field work .Their marriage of 52 years was blessed with four children - Annette, Janninne, William and Amanda.

Ed and Linda farmed in the Fairfax area until 1984. At that time, they moved to the Springfield area where Ed worked for another farmer feeding cattle, making silage and planting in the spring and harvesting in the fall. After a number of years, Ed acquired a job at Teske Mfg. in Springfield helping construct trailers. Even after retiring, he continued to help other farmers in the fall with harvesting.

Sunday afternoons were meant for old time music on KNUJ - a tradition he loved.

Ed is survived by his wife Linda; daughter Janninne Massicotte (Mark) of Iron Mountain Ml, son William (Jesse) of Spicer, MN and daughter Amanda Beulke (Jonathan) of New Prague, MN; two sisters, Mary Moldan (Marlyn) and Elizabeth (Gilbert) Varland; sister-in-law Diane Schweiss as well as many nieces and nephews. He has eight grandchildren - Matthew, Amelia, Hudson, Charlie, Theo, Ava/ Sophia and Vivian. They were a great joy in his life. He was preceded in death by his daughter Annette, his parents William and Ann Schweiss, brothers Raymond and Francis, in-laws Robert and Frieda Ulmen, Dorothy and Jim Cain, Charles and Jeanette Kruse, Kathleen Tharp and Kay Schweiss.

"It isn't the farm that makes the farmer, it's the love, hard work and character."
