Doris Torkelson

Doris Cordelia Torkelson was born February 12, 1918, in Highwater Township, Cottonwood County, the daughter of Torkel and Tillie (Hanson) Torkelson. She attended country school in District 3 and graduated from Lamberton High School in 1936. Doris attended Teacher's Training in Lamberton and then taught in rural schools for 17 years. She continued to further her education at Mankato State College and earned her degree in 1960. Doris taught in Mountain Lake and Tracy before teaching for 20 years in Redwood Falls for a total of 43 years in the teaching profession. She was a former member of Highwater Lutheran Church and a current member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls. Doris also taught Sunday School, was a member of the Altar Guild, Bible Circles, WELCA, and the Sorosis Study Club. She was a former telecare coordinator and Meals-on-Wheels coordinator, and was a member of the Retired Teachers' Group and the Doris Club. Doris loved people, was a frequent visitor at the nursing homes, and enjoyed traveling, reading, entertaining, cooking, baking, and telephoning - the lines were hot. Doris Cordelia Torkelson died Wednesday, March 29, 2006, at Valley View Manor in Lamberton at the age of 88 years. Survivors include sister- Alpha Erickson of Lamberton; brother- Richard and wife Ardys Torkelson of Lamberton; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister- Beulah Matzke; brothers-in-law- Clifford Erickson and Oren Matzke; and nephew- Arvin Erickson.
