Doris Ayres

Doris Ayres, age 77, of St. James, died on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center in St. James. Doris Mae Sandmeyer was born July 29, 1932, on the family farm in Comfrey the second of eight children, to parents Herman and Marie (Hanson) Sandmeyer. She grew up in Comfrey and moved to St. James in the early 1950's. Doris worked at Scherr-Tumico, Eckman Bakery and Butterfield foods prior to getting married on December 29, 1956 to Donald Ayres in St. James. The couple moved to Villard where Doris and Donald co-owned the Ayres Shady Rest Resort with Donald's parents. In 1974 they moved back to St. James and Doris worked at Green Giant until 1978 when she took early retirement to stay home and take care of Don until his death in 2008. Doris was an avid reader she enjoyed crocheting and embroidery, sewing Barbie clothes, cross word puzzles, gardening, tending her flowers and holiday decorating. Doris enjoyed visiting with family and friends either in person or by telephone. She was a member of the Methodist Church, American Legion auxiliary, and Bible study. Doris is preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers Jerrold, Norman, brother-in-laws Armand Schroeder and Fred Scofield. She is survived by her daughters Darla (Joe) Sharbach of Lakeville, Dana (Kevan) Moody of St. James, grandchildren Jesse Sharbach, Trevor (Sarah) Sharbach, Alayna Moody, Jill Moody, sisters LaVonne Schroeder of St. James, Mildred (Lloyd) Weckworth of Springfield, Norma Lou (Marlyn) Sieg of South Branch, Joyce Sandmeyer of St. James, Mary Ellen Sandmeyer of St. James, sister-in-law Judy Scofield of Zimm, numerous nieces and nephews.
