Donald Feil

January 5, 1926 — November 30, 2013

Donald Gottfried Ace Feil was born on January 5, 1926 to Gottfried and Katharina (Mende) Feil, the 3rd of six children. He attended Mountain Lake Public Schools, graduating with the Class of 1943. A lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Donny was baptized and confirmed there and served for many years as head usher. In 1956 when his mother, Kate went to heaven, Donald assisted his father by assuming the halftime parental role of caring for his youngest brother, Ron. Don worked as a builder with his father and brothers on their family carpentry crew, G.S. Feil and Sons (later known as Feil Brothers' Builders). He took pride in his work on building such as: Trinity Lutheran Church, First Mennonite Church, and many local homes, and the development of 13th Street. When local talk began about having a golf course, Don recruited his brother Robert's help and together they donated their labor to the construction of the club house. Don became an avid golfer and played until just a few years ago. Enjoyment came from Don's family, friends, building, bowling, golfing, gardening (especially cabbage), going to Bergen with his friend, Charlie Bisel. He also enjoyed going to the Wenberg cabin in Grand Maris where fish were caught and he was the cook. Don was a beloved uncle to three generations of nieces and nephews. He had a nickname for each one and Squiggles was the name they gave him. He was the sparkplug at family gatherings; when asked why he never married, his answer was always, No one asked me! Don always brought the delicious coleslaw that he made from his cabbage, cut on his antique shredder. Don is survived by his sister, Vera (Wayne) Starr, brother Ron (Bev) Feil, sisters-in-law: Buddy Feil and Marilyn (Pete Peterson) Feil, nephews, nieces, God children, cousins, and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Robert, Loren, and infant Gottfried, and uncle, Jake Mende. Blessed be the memory of dear Donny.
