DeWayne Steve Malmgren, 89, of Saint James, died July 28, 2025, at Mayo Health System in Saint James.
Visitation will be held on August 12, 2025, from 4:00-7:00 p.m., at Sturm Funeral Home in Saint James. The Rosary will be prayed at 3:30 p.m. and sharing of memories at 6:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on August 13, 2025, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., at Sturm Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held August 13, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at Saint James Catholic Church in Saint James. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Saint James. The family prefers memorials be given to the Calvary Cemetery Association in Saint James. Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home in Saint James. DeWayne was born April 3, 1936, to Walter and Lucy (Sandmeyer) Malmgren in Saint James, Minnesota. He attended Saint James Catholic School until the 8th grade and graduated from Saint James High School in 1954. He continued his education at Mankato Commercial in Accounting. Following his education in Mankato, he returned to Saint James to assist in running the family business due to a family illness. On July 2, 1963, DeWayne married Marie Chalupa at Holy Redeemer Church in Montgomery, Minnesota. Together, they raised two sons, Steven and Daniel.
DeWayne served in the Minnesota National Guard. He was a member of the Saint James American Legion, Knights of Columbus, served on the Calvary Cemetery board, and was the Saint James Airport Manager for many years.
In his free time, DeWayne enjoyed aviation, restoring antique tractors, western TV shows, auctions, and flea markets. He had a strong catholic faith and was the pilar of his family.
DeWayne is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marie; sons, Steve (Carol) Malmgren of Wheaton, Illinois and Dan (Leah) Malmgren of Marine on St. Croix, Minnesota; grandchildren, Jake (Therese) Malmgren, Susannah (Ben) Fessler, Lilyanne Malmgren, Corey Malmgren, Luke Malmgren, and Rachel Malmgren; great grandchildren, James Malmgren and Elenora Fessler; sisters, Janice (Bob) Anderson and Elaine (Mike) Anderson; and 9 nieces and nephews.
DeWayne was preceded in death by his parents and brother and sister-in-law, Leon and Monica Malmgren.
