Dennis Edward Scholtz

Dennis E. Scholtz, age 86, of Comfrey, Minnesota died on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield. Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm at New Hope Lutheran Church in Comfrey. Visitation will continue on Thursday from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at the church. A memorial service will be held at New Hope Lutheran Church in Comfrey on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at 11:00 am. The clergy will be Pastor John Hopper. Interment will be at New Hope Faith Lutheran Cemetery in Comfrey. Arrangements are with Sturm Funeral Home in Comfrey. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.sturmfh.com.

Dennis Edward Scholtz was born on April 9, 1938, in Springfield, Minnesota. He grew up on the family farm by Springfield with his parents, Leonard and Esther and his brother, Myron. He attended country school until grade five and then he continued his education at Springfield Public School. Dennis was involved in many activities in high school, and he was a longtime participant in 4-H where he exhibited hogs, sheep, and dairy, earning championships on all levels at the Minnesota State Fair. After graduation in 1956, he worked at various jobs including Del Monte, Hatchery, and the Sales Barn.

Dennis met his wife, Diana, at a 4-H roller-skating party. They were married on September 19, 1959, and began farm life on a farm west of Comfrey, starting out with dairy farming and adding hogs, sheep, and goats through the years. Dennis loved his animals and had a keen eye for quality, always looking livestock sales over carefully. He passed on his love of 4-H to his children and grandchildren, supporting them on all levels and thoroughly enjoyed attending many fairs over the years.

Faith, community, and church were important to Dennis. He was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church in Comfrey. Dennis enjoyed attending sporting events to watch his children and grandchildren including track and field, cross country, basketball, and softball. Additionally, they enjoyed vacationing at a lake in Alexandra, Minnesota with family and friends. Dennis and Diana loved all kinds of dancing, attended country western concerts, playing cards, several cruises, trips to various locations including Hawaii, New York, Alaska, California, the Fair Board Convention in Las Vegas, east coast visits with Diana’s family, and bus trips to many locations. They shared their anniversary date with the birthdays of their son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter. He battled cancer for over 20 years and his last drive was three miles to look at the farmstead where he lived for 57 years. Dennis was a great husband, dad, and grandpa and he loved his family dearly.

Dennis is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Diana Scholtz of Comfrey; children, Scott (Colleen) Scholtz of Windom, Greg Scholtz of Comfrey, Kelly Mogler (Jill Klein) of Elkhorn, NE, Vonda (Brad) Carnell of Comfrey, and Stacy (Jared) Green of Comfrey; grandchildren, Matt (Kylie) Scholtz, Crystal Preston, Chris (Laura) Scholtz, Andy (Lainie) Scholtz, Emily (Jared) Radcliffe, Chelsea (Kyle) Steiner, Mike (Kanitha) Mogler, Laura (Matt) Fischer, Molly (Hunter) Dahna, Haily Green, Paige Green, and Sutter Green; 13 great-grandchildren; brother, Myron (Marsha) Scholtz of Cambridge, MN; sisters-in-law, Ann Douglas of Schenectady, NY and Ola Douglas of Alexandria, VA; and many other loving relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
