David Schmidt

David Gene Schmidt was born May 14, 1948 in Springfield, MN to Donald, Sr. and Evelyn (Schultz) Schmidt. A lifetime resident of Springfield, David graduated from Springfield High School in 1967. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the Naval Destroyer USS Biddle during the Vietnam War. David was honorably discharged on August 1, 1971 and received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (2 Stars), Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Secretary of the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon. He then attended Canby Vo-Tech and studied Electrical. David worked in St. James at Swift, now Con-Agra, for several years in shipping and receiving. He was united in marriage to Mary Paur on September 29, 2014 in New Ulm. David was a lifetime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Springfield, and John Watson American Legion Post #257. He enjoyed raising flowers, all things Elvis, collecting rocks, collecting instruments and giving them away, and music. David especially enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. He is survived by wife Mary; sons- Jeremy (Cora), Andy, Adam, and Justin; step-children- Dan (Emily), Nina (Dick), and Gage (Shana); grandchildren- Briana, Wyatt, Will, Parker, Elliot, Zoey, Vaida, Dominik, Kya, Timothy, Theodore, Amiya, Gage, Jr., and Damareon; ex-wife Helene Schmidt; and brothers and sisters- Carol (Louie), Chuck (Marsha), Clyde (Donna), Barbara, Diane (Steve), and Donald, Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law Jim Ottoway.
