Dale Read

Dale Charles Read was born April 19, 1917, in Clear Lake, IA, the son of Russell and Lilla Mae (Hayes) Read. The family moved to Fort Dodge, IA where Dale graduated from Fort Dodge High School. He was united in marriage to Vergie Blaine on November 9, 1939. Dale enlisted in the U.S. Navy in February of 1942 and served for four years on board the USS Stansbury, a converted Destroyer/Minesweeper. He spent two years in the Atlantic, then two years in the South Pacific following the invasion of Casablanca. The couple moved to Springfield in 1956, where Dale worked at Ochs Brick Tile as Secretary and Treasurer until his retirement in 1982. He was a member of John Watson American Legion Post #257 and loved golf, fishing, woodworking and traveling. Dale Charles Read died Tuesday, July 24, 2007, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield at the age of 90 years. He is survived by wife- Vergie of Springfield; sisters- Iona Hawks of Baltimore, MD, and Izetta Hansen of Las Vegas, NV; sister-in-law- Lucille Blaine of Denver, CO; and several nieces and nephews. Dale is preceded in death by his parents, brother Ross, and sister-in-law Rosemary Read.
