Clarine Sporrey

Clarine Serena Sydness Sporrey was born on July 4th, 1921, in Jackson County to Roy and Mabel Sydness. She was raised in Jackson County and went to country school for the first 8 grades. She graduated from Lakefield High School. She then went to "Teacher's College" in Mankato for 2 yrs. Her first job was in Easton, MN. She also taught at Dunnell, Sherburn and then at St. James. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education, taking night school classes. She also attended the University of Colorado. Clarine was married to Warren Sporrey on June 2nd, 1956 in Lakefield, MN. They lived in St. James following their marriage. Clarine taught school in St. James for 22 yrs, first through sixth grades. Clarine was active in the First Presbyterian Church with the Women's Association, Church Circles and Bible School. She was active in Extension Club, 4-H, MEA, and REAM (Retired Educators Association of MN). She volunteered at Pleasant View Nursing Home for many years and also at the St. James Library. Clarine sponsored children through the Christian Children's Fund for over 35 yrs. Clarine and Warren wintered in McAllen, Texas. Clarine enjoyed knitting, crocheting, painting, reading, needle work and traveling. Her first trip to Europe was with college friends in the 1950's. Clarine was involved in Philanthropy work and donated to the St. James Medical Center and Mankato State University. She was an Honorary Campaign Cabinet member of the St. James Medical Center Foundation. She is survived by her brother, LeRoy Sydness, Jackson, MN; nephew Jon Sydness, Mankato, MN and nieces Alice (Jory) Rasmussen, Anoka, MN; Janet Washington, Boston, MA; Kari (Mark) Anderson, Baltimore, MD; and Becky (David) Liebl, Eden Prairie, MN. She is preceded in death by her husband Warren Sporrey and her parents. Blessed be the memory of Clarine Sporrey.
