Bruce Wetter

December 31, 1930 — July 9, 2017

Bruce A. Wetter was born in New Ulm, MN on December 31, 1930, the son of Otto and Hazel (Coomes) Wetter. He grew up on the family farm north of Lamberton. He attended grade school in Wanda and graduated from Lamberton High School in 1948. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served until 1952. Bruce returned to Lamberton after his discharge, and lived in the community his entire life. On October 17, 1953, he married Arlene Arends. They had two children and were married for 63 years. For the last nearly 50 years they lived in the house that he designed and built for the family, spending evenings and weekends doing nearly all of the work himself. Bruce worked as a lineman for Interstate Power Company from 1952 until retiring in 1987. After his retirement he worked for Kluegel Funeral Home and then Sturm Funeral Home for many years, an occupation he very much enjoyed. Bruce was instrumental in the development of the Lamberton Community Center, overseeing its construction on a daily basis. He started nearly every day of his retirement enjoying a cup of coffee with his wife and reading the Wall Street Journal. Bruce was a talented and intelligent man with a wide variety of interests which he nurtured through the years. He was a gifted and accomplished woodworker, creating beautiful furniture and intricate turned bowls and vases. A love of nature and watching things grow were another passion. He had beautiful flower and vegetable gardens and enjoyed learning and experimenting with new and different varieties. Numerous species of trees that he cultivated filled his yard and "the park" across the street. The birds and squirrels that inhabited the trees were a source of enjoyment and he fed them regularly. Together Bruce and Arlene traveled to numerous flea markets, antique shops and auctions collecting pottery, crystal and antique tools. In his later years, Bruce found an interest in cooking and especially enjoyed experimenting with new recipes. Grilling and soups were his specialties. Bruce is survived by his wife, Arlene; son, David (Michelle) of Mendon, NY; daughter Julie (Randy) Heller of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Stacy (Travis) Downs, Molly (Ryan) Volenec, Joseph Heller and Jenna Heller; great-grandchildren, Maxwell and Vivian Volenec and Caroline Downs; and brother, Myrland. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Maurice, Merle, Duane, and Milo; and sisters, Zona Krinke and Donna Goolsbay.
