Betty Stevens, age 91, of St. James, died on Thursday, November 11, 2021, at the Good Samaritan Society - Pleasant View in St. James. Funeral services will be 11am, Friday, November 19, 2021, at Albion Lutheran Church, rural St. James, with Rev. Robert Springer officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before services at the church on Friday. Betty Jane Bottem was born November 28, 1929, on the family farm in Nelson Township, Watonwan County, Minnesota. The daughter of Oscar and Hazel (Blackstad) Bottem. She attended St. James High School and then Mankato Commercial College. She was united in marriage to Walter Gerald Stevens on September 29, 1951 at Albion Lutheran Church, rural St. James. Betty Stevens enjoyed farm life, including gardening and cooking delicious meals for everyone, especially during planting and harvesting. For relaxation, she watched Hallmark movies, read good books, and sewed. She also had an appreciation of flowers, bird watching, and taking pictures. Betty loved attending her grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's birthday parties bringing her special banana bread. Precious memories of time spent at Spider Lake were treasured being together with her family. During many retirement years, Betty traveled to Arizona and California with Gerald. Her last celebration was their 70th wedding anniversary in September. Betty was truly a woman of strength and faith. She had a kind, sweet, gentle personality even while going through her battle with Parkinson's disease. Betty will dearly be missed. She is survived by her husband Walter Gerald Stevens of St. James, 6 children; Sandra (Jim) Spitzner of Prior Lake, Judy (Gene) Lindquist of St. James, Vickie (Roger) Janzen of Waconia, Wayne (Corinne) Stevens of New Ulm, Barb (Joel) Blaschko of Lakeville, Warren (Tammy) Stevens of St. James, 23 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a sister Joan Pearson of Mt. Lake. She is preceded in death by her grandson Andrew Janzen, great-grandson Lincoln Spitzner, her parents and brother-in-law LaVern Pearson.
