Betty (Randall) Nesterud was born on the family farm in Steele County on September 1, 1927, to Cecil and Alma Randall. She was the second oldest of four siblings: Phai, Betty, Oliver and Ralph. She graduated from Ellendale High School and Mankato Teachers College and later Mankato State. Betty began teaching at Madelia Elementary School in 1947 and continued teaching there for 37 years. She met the love of her life, Alston "Shorty" Nesterud of Madelia that same year and they were married in June 1949. Shorty and Betty raised two children, Barry and Joyce. Their lives were filled with family and friends, road trips, dinners and dancing, sports, Vikings, Twins, hunting, fishing, hard work and Church. Shorty and Betty owned Nesterud Construction and built over 50 homes in the Madelia area and remodeled countless others. Sadly, Shorty passed away in October 1985. Betty continued teaching; filling her life with family and friends, world travel, plotting and planning road trips, cruises, adventures, reading, playing Bridge, crossword puzzles, Church, music, singing, walking, water aerobics, entertaining, Viking's games and a love for life. She moved to The Pillars assisted living in Mankato in September 2021. She loved her apartment, the staff, special events, but especially the dear friends she made there. She returned to Madelia every Sunday for coffee and dessert with family and friends. She celebrated her 95th Birthday in Madelia at her home on September 4, 2022. It was a Grand Gathering! Betty greeted each and every day with a smile on her beautiful face happiness in her generous heart and the knowledge that she had led a full life with no regrets. She loved unconditionally, those fortunate enough to be a part of her life.
She will be joining her husband Shorty and many family members and friends who preceded her in death. She will be dearly missed but we celebrate the way she lived her life.
Betty is survived by her son, Barry (Cindy) Nesterud; daughter, Joyce (Bradley) Hall; grandson, Wyatt Hall; step-grandsons, Jason (Dawn) Farley, Matt (Emily) Hookom, step-great-grandchildren, Belle, Luke and Noah; sister-in-law, Margaret Randall; countless nieces and nephews, cousins and many beloved family members and friends.
