Betty was born on April 17, 1932 in Clarissa, MN the daughter of Alfred and Matie (Zuhlke) Schafer. She grew up and attended school in Clarissa and later attended college to receive her teaching certificate. After her schooling she taught country school near Clarissa. Betty was united in marriage to Elden Hirth on June 22, 1952 in Clarissa. In 1955 they moved to the New Ulm area where Betty taught country school at Clear Lake and later with the New Ulm School District. Betty also worked at the Brown County Treasurers Office for several years. When Elden entered the insurance business Betty also retained her insurance license and worked alongside Elden for many years. They retired in 1997 and traveled and fished together for the last 20 years. Betty enjoyed gardening, canning and making Christmas gifts from canned goods. She was an active member of Oakwood United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday school superintendent and served on many boards and committees. Survivors include her children, Daniel (Susan) Hirth, David (Mila) Hirth, Kimberly (Douglas) Rono all of New Ulm, grandchildren Natalie(Joseph) Bastian, Alison (special friend, Eric Cruz) Rono, Tyler Hirth, Morgan (fiance, Matt Mann) Hirth, step-grandchild, Zach Quiring, great-grandchildren, Aidan and Claire Bastian and Christian Cruz and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Eldy in 2009 and 5 siblings.
